With a decades-long history of proven success, GORE® SKYFLEX® Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series (with adhesive or no adhesive), were created by W. L. Gore & Associates to combat the numerous sealing and surface protection challenges in military and civil aircraft. Available in a variety of material sets, forms and sizes, they are lightweight, flexible and non-curing, leading to easy installation in less time, as well as significantly reducing manufacturing cycles and direct maintenance. And because they simplify aircraft assembly with seals able to withstand numerous open-close cycles, GORE SKYFLEX Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series are often used as an alternative to Form-In-Place (FIP) seals.
The following safety information applies to GORE SKYFLEX Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series and should be reviewed carefully before use. For more information about compatibility with your specific civil or defense aircraft applications, contact a Gore representative.
Regulatory Information
Tested and qualified to meet strict industry standards, GORE SKYFLEX Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series are supplied as a rolled good on a carrier film. The carrier film should be removed at the point of use. Because they are further defined as the following, a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) are not required:
- An article in the United States per OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.1200(b)(6)(v) during normal intended use
- Described in EC Regulation 1907/2006/EC
- A “manufactured Item” under Canadian CEPA regulations
What’s more, GORE SKYFLEX Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series do not contain any of the REACH Regulation (EU/1907/2006) Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) at concentrations above 0.1% (w/w) as published by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
Safety Information
Since Gore’s aerospace tapes are made of non-hazardous materials, they can be installed, removed, repaired or otherwise handled without the required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and no special waste handling is necessary. However, it is important to note that when materials are involved in a fire or cut/removed using grinding, burning or elevated temperature processes, there is a risk that hazardous decomposition byproducts may form. In addition to traces of incompletely burned carbon products, these include the following:
- Carbon dioxide and monoxide
- Carbonyl fluoride
- Formaldehyde
- Hexafluoropropylene
- Hydrogen and hydrogen fluoride
- Perfluoroisobutylene
- Tetrafluoroethylene
Recommended Standard Practices
When installing or repairing GORE SKYFLEX Aerospace Tapes, 100 and 110 Series, and to reduce exposure to decomposition byproducts, Gore recommends these following standard practices:
- Download or view videos of our step-by-step instructions.
- Never heat the materials with adhesive over 120°C (248°F) or non-adhesive materials over 260°C (500°F).
- Note: Temperature is dependent on the adhesive specified.
- Unless using effective local exhaust ventilation and PPE, avoid burning, grinding, high-temperature cutting or melting the materials.
- Guard materials from fire, and in the event of a fire, do the following:
- Wear full PPE, including a self-contained breathing apparatus to help avoid symptoms of polymer fume fever.
- Remember that hydrogen fluoride fumes emitted during a fire can react with water to form hydrofluoric acid.
- Use neoprene gloves when handling refuse from a fire.
- To dispose of the materials, follow local, state, national and/or international guidelines.
